چکیده

(Automated) Inductive Theorem Proving (ITP) is a challenging field in automated reasoning and theorem proving. Typically, (Automated) Theorem Proving (TP) refers to methods, techniques and tools for automatically proving general (most often first-order) theorems. Nowadays, the field of TP has reached a certain degree of maturity and powerful TP systems are widely available and used. The situation with ITP is strikingly different, in the sense that proving inductive theorems in an essentially automatic way still is a very challenging task, even for the most advanced existing ITP systems. Both in general TP and in ITP, strategies for guiding the proof search process are of fundamental importance, in automated as well as in interactive or mixed settings. In the paper we will analyze and discuss the most important strategic and proof search issues in ITP, compare ITP with TP, and argue why ITP is in a sense much more challenging. More generally, we will systematically isolate, investigate and classify the main problems and challenges in ITP w.r.t. automation, on different levels and from different points of views. Finally, based on this analysis we will present some theses about the state of the art in the field, possible criteria for what could be considered as substantial progress, and promising lines of research for the future, towards (more) automated ITP.

A New Implementation of Multi-Context Algebraic Inductive Theorem Prover

Term rewriting induction (RI) is a principle for automatic inductive theorem proving proposed by Reddy. There are several strategic issues in RI: (1) which reduction order should be applied, (2) which (axiomatic or hypothetical) rules should be applied during rewriting, and (3) which variables should be instantiated for induction. The multi-context rewriting induction with termination checker (...

Theory Exploration and Inductive Theorem Proving

We have built two state-of-the-art inductive theorem provers named HipSpec and Hipster. The main issue when automating proofs by induction is to discover essential helper lemmas. Our theorem provers use the technique theory exploration, which is amethod to systematically discover interesting conclusions about a mathematical theory. We use the existing theory exploration system QuickSpec which c...

Inductive Theorem Proving by Program Specialisation: Generating Proofs for Isabelle Using Ecce

In this paper we discuss the similarities between program specialisation and inductive theorem proving, and then show how program specialisation can be used to perform inductive theorem proving. We then study this relationship in more detail for a particular class of problems (verifying infinite state Petri nets) in order to establish a clear link between program specialisation and inductive th...

TIP: Tons of Inductive Problems

This paper describes our collection of benchmarks for inductive theorem provers. The recent spur of interest in automated inductive theorem proving has increased the demands for evaluation and comparison between systems. We expect the benchmark suite to continually grow as more problems are submitted by the community. New challenge problems will promote further development of provers which will...

Towards Intelligent Inductive Proof Engineering

This paper deals with inductive theorem proving (ITP for short). It does not provide new theoretical results but analyses existing ITP methods from an AI point of view. The presentation is based on the implicit ITP approach, i.e. ITP using the well-developed framework of rewriting and completion techniques for systems of equations and rewrite rules. We think that the relevant practical problems...
